SERIOUSLY. RUN.
Oscar Wilde, an Irish novelist and poet once said, "One can survive everything
nowadays, except death, and live down anything, except a good reputation." Through
this, Oscar acknowledges that everything in society is pretty much escapable, but living
up to a good reputation within the community, is a constant and continuous effort. In the
book "The Crucible," Arthur Miller portrays multiple characters outliving and getting past
the strict moral values in an attempt to keep up with a good reputation through John
Proctor, Reverend Paris, and Abigail Williams.
In the long past history of man, there has been many battles, tears, blood. Most likely
those disagreements were caused because of reason; mostly involving freedom. Yet, in
the past, there may have been some that weren't even worth taking to the extreme. If
you really had the time to look back at both huge or/ idiotic conflicts. They both had
lives, it really didn't matter, how intense the conflict was. Especially, if the conflict was
around a society of pure reputation, like, "The Crucible." It was revolved around
reputation because when the people in Salem were living, their lives were based on
religion. Their lives had a lot of secrets and and gossip. Even though it was a sin to talk
about others, some still did it. Except for those few people that were different,so in a
way they never existed. So, they weren't going to be missed, when the whole talk of
witch craft happened. Although, there were a few main characters, that were got blamed
on; even though It was mostly for the accusers own enjoyment. It really did get intense,
just because the people didn't stop and think. The accusers didn't have any proof, for
framing most of them. All the harm the accusers caused, towards the falsely accused;
was purely because they were protecting their own reputation.
The Crucible takes place in colonial America when society was just developing. The
tight knit societies of the the Northern Colonies made it easy for the people in the town-
ships to have some knowledge of others life and family. This closeness in living made it
easy for people to find out bad things about others and if they have committed an
unlawful crime or action that is beyond the average norm. Reputation is extremely
important in Salem, where public and private moralities are one and the same. In an
environment where reputation plays such an important role, the fear of guilt by
association becomes particularly baleful. Focused on maintaining public reputation, the
townsfolk of Salem must fear that the sins of their friends and associates will taint their
names. John Proctor and Abigail Williams, and have shown the most dismay in trying to
protect their name through out the play, and at no expense will they let their names be tarnished. Parris is also a character who yearns to keep his name white, to retain his status of minister of Salem.
They were a LOT more unique than the others and made me want to bludgeon myself a lot less. They gave some background which was nice. And yes they give me ideas on how to improve.
